Millions of Peaches

neighborly peaches

“Life is better than death, I believe, if only because it is less boring, and because it has fresh peaches in it.” – Alice Walker

So my neighbor brought me a bag-o-peaches. They smelled like PEACHES. I forgot what peaches smelled like. Even living in sunny California, the out-of-season produce available can make you lose your seasonal bearings.

So what to make. Bag-o-peaches. Weekend without the husband. Empty oven. Her husband kindly suggested a pie…which he also kindly offered to eat for me. I JUST made an apple pie a few weeks ago and I wasn’t feeling very pie-ish. So I went with what I’m best at, first. Alcohol.

Peach Sangria! Apothic Red, Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum and peaches. Okay, not a traditional recipe BUT it worked. Color me surprised. All at once floral and fruity and earthly. Summer at it’s finest.

I still had a ton of peaches left so I turned to my all time favorite recipe for Pear and ginger upside down cake from the always brilliant Fannie Farmer. I simply replaced the pears with peaches. Ginger and peaches go together like chocolate and peanut butter, Bonnie and Clyde, Rum and coke…you get the picture. Things shifted a little in the making but still turned out okay I think.

I hope her husband won’t be disappointed!
